AICAR

Overview

AICAR is an analog of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and a precursor in the de novo purine biosynthesis pathway. As a research tool, it is one of the most widely used pharmacological activators of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK).

AICAR has been studied in research on energy metabolism, exercise biology, glucose homeostasis, and mitochondrial biogenesis. It is a foundational reference compound for AMPK-targeted research.
