01Product details
Overview
AICAR is an analog of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and a precursor in the de novo purine biosynthesis pathway. As a research tool, it is one of the most widely used pharmacological activators of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK).
Research Background
AICAR has been studied in research on energy metabolism, exercise biology, glucose homeostasis, and mitochondrial biogenesis. It is a foundational reference compound for AMPK-targeted research.
Storage & Handling
Store lyophilized peptide at -20°C for long-term stability. Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, store at 2–8°C and use within recommended timeframes. Handle under sterile laboratory conditions and avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Disclaimer:
This product is for laboratory research use only. It is not intended for human or animal consumption or for use in any diagnostic, therapeutic, or clinical applications.
02Mechanism of action
Following cellular uptake, AICAR is phosphorylated to ZMP (AICAR monophosphate), which mimics AMP and activates AMPK. AMPK activation triggers a coordinated metabolic response: increased glucose uptake (via GLUT4 translocation), enhanced fatty acid oxidation, suppression of anabolic processes (protein synthesis, fatty acid synthesis, gluconeogenesis), and stimulation of mitochondrial biogenesis through PGC-1α.
03Research applications
AICAR is studied in research on energy metabolism, AMPK signaling, exercise biology, glucose homeostasis, and mitochondrial function. It is a reference compound for AMPK-pathway research.
