01Product details
Overview
Melanotan I, also known as Afamelanotide, is a synthetic linear tridecapeptide modeled on α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone with substitutions ([Nle⁴, D-Phe⁷]-α-MSH) that confer enhanced metabolic stability and high MC1R selectivity.
Research Background
Melanotan I has been studied in research on melanogenesis, photoprotection, and pigmentation biology. Unlike Melanotan II, it is comparatively selective for MC1R and does not strongly engage the MC3/4/5 receptors involved in appetite and sexual behavior.
Storage & Handling
Store lyophilized peptide at -20°C for long-term stability. Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, store at 2–8°C and use within recommended timeframes. Handle under sterile laboratory conditions and avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Disclaimer:
This product is for laboratory research use only. It is not intended for human or animal consumption or for use in any diagnostic, therapeutic, or clinical applications.
02Mechanism of action
Melanotan I binds and activates the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) on melanocytes. MC1R activation engages Gs-coupled cAMP signaling, upregulating MITF (microphthalmia-associated transcription factor), tyrosinase, and TRP-1/2 enzymes responsible for synthesis of eumelanin. The result is increased melanin production and altered pigmentation in skin and hair models.
03Research applications
Melanotan I is studied in research on melanogenesis, photoprotection, MC1R pharmacology, and pigmentation disorders. It serves as a selective MC1R reference compound in melanocortin research.
