01Product details
Overview
MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA-c) is a 16–amino acid peptide encoded within mitochondrial DNA and translated from a small open reading frame in the 12S ribosomal RNA region. It is one of the best-characterized mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs).
Research Background
MOTS-c has been studied in research on metabolic regulation, insulin sensitivity, exercise biology, and cellular stress responses. Its discovery has expanded the understanding of mitochondria as endocrine-signaling organelles.
Storage & Handling
Store lyophilized peptide at -20°C for long-term stability. Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, store at 2–8°C and use within recommended timeframes. Handle under sterile laboratory conditions and avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Disclaimer:
This product is for laboratory research use only. It is not intended for human or animal consumption or for use in any diagnostic, therapeutic, or clinical applications.
02Mechanism of action
MOTS-c is released from mitochondria into the cytosol and circulation in response to metabolic stress. It modulates AMPK signaling, influencing glucose uptake, fatty acid oxidation, and mitochondrial biogenesis. Under stress conditions, MOTS-c translocates to the nucleus, where it associates with stress-response transcription factors (including NRF2) to regulate adaptive gene expression.
03Research applications
MOTS-c is studied in research on insulin sensitivity, metabolic homeostasis, exercise adaptation, mitochondrial biology, and cellular aging. It is a foundational reference for mitochondrial-derived peptide research.
